Atomic elements exist in nature with single atoms as their most basic units.

For example, Helium atoms, Oxygen atoms, Gold atoms....


Molecular elments, are those that exist in nature as molecules as their basic units.

For example, H2 molecules, O2 molecules, Cl2 molecules...


Ionic compound are composed of cations and anions bounded together by ionic bonds.  The formula unit is the basic unit of the ionic bond.

For example, NaCl, KCl...


Molecular compound are usually composed of two or more covalently bonded nonmetals.   Molecules are the basis units.

For example, H2O, CO2...
