How do the properties of compounds compare to the properties of the elements from which they are composed?

Compounds are formed from elements combined in a fixed definite proportions.  The properties generally very greatly between the properties of the compounds and the elements that form them.  When elements combine to form a compound, an entirely new substance is formed.
