What kind of energy is chemical energy? In what way is an elevated weight similar to a tank of gasoline?

Chemical energy is potential energy.

A raised weight is like a tank of gas, because both contain potential energy and will  undergo change that will lower the potential energy.  As this potential energy is release (converted to kinetic energy) some of it can be utilized for doing work, such as moving a car.
