What is the equivalent resistance of the combination of identical resistors between points a and b in the figure below?

The rules for adding resistors are to just add them if they are in series, however if they are in parallel you take the inverse sum of the reciprocals of the resistors in the parallel:

R // R // R  (*the three resistors in parallel, // = parallel) this can be combined as follows:

R // R // R =  (1 / (1/R) + (1/R) + (1/R) )  = 1 / 3/R  = 1/3 R

Now just add the other two resistors in series with this combined resistor and we get:

1R + 1/3 R + 1R = 2.33333 R
