What is the meaning of the phrase "zero-age main sequence" applied to stars?

It is the line in the H-R diagram along which stars are arranged as they begin their most extended period of stable nuclear fusion.
It is the curve along which protostars evolve on their way to the main sequence.
The main sequence is the evolutionary track followed by stars as they age.
It is a contradiction because stars cannot be both on the main sequence and of zero age.
Stars that are on the main sequence will stay there forever.
